24 Road Runners to take on Comrades

With the Comrades Marathon taking place tomorrow, athletes from Polokwane Road Runners (PRR) had their goodie bag function on Saturday, 2 June at their clubhouse.

POLOKWANE – This year a total of 24 athletes from the club will take part in the down run starting in Pietermaritzburg and finishing 90 km later in Durban.

The athletes taking part in the Comrades for the first time this year are Asefa Erute, Jacques van Blerk, Liezel Swanepoel, Noelene Maré and Webster Letswalo.

Back-to-back runners are athletes who ran their first marathon last year and will run their second one this year. They will then, at the end of this race, receive two medals. They are Lucky Maahlo, Helga Moreira, Annalie Fuchs and Amri van Aarde.

Colinda Potgieter is PRR’s woman athlete who ran the most Comrades Marathons with 17 marathons to her name and a best time of 08:43:50. Lazarus Seroka is the male athlete with the most Comrades Marathon runs to his name at 18 with a best time of 06:15:22.

Another athlete, Martin Steyn, is an avid runner who ran the 100 m in school. After school he played provincial rugby and since then competed in five Argus cycle challenges, three full Iron Man competitions, two 70.3 Iron Man Competitions and four Comrades Marathons with a best time of 09:35.

“I am running the Comrades this year because I do not have anything better to do. I am doing it for fun and I am not going to put a time frame to it,” he said.
