Cricketers awarded for excellence

The Impala Cricket Awards, which gave recognition to the cream of the Limpopo cricket crop was held on Friday, 25 May at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

POLOKWANE – The award ceremony was an elegant affair set off to an emotional start when commendation was given to the players that passed away in the past season, Ndzalama Mabunda, Thabo Themba and Moyahabo Ntatamala.

Clayton Smith (CEO of Limpopo Impala Cricket) with Kgatla Kgomo who took home the umpire of the year trophy.

The President of Limpopo Impala Cricket, John Mogodi gave thanks to all the people who played a vital role in making sure that LIC is where it is.

“A lot of achievements have been acquired. Congratulations, you have worked hard. Cricket is a very expensive sport and for the winners to have achieved what they achieved means that somebody had to sacrifice, be it the school, the parents or the vision of LIC, so I would like to thank every single person for their contribution to cricket. We have seen lots of sporting codes suffer and decline, but we have seen cricket going from strength to strength.” he said.

Clayton Smith (CEO of Limpopo Impala Cricket) with Merichia Hattingh who took home the Limpopo Impala Cricket Clubs – bowler of the women’s league trophy.

He further announced that for the first time this year, LIC is going to be part of the Africa T20 Cup.

Onicca Moloi, the MEC for Sport spoke about the importance of sport to the youth. She thanked all the people who continue to play a crucial role in developing the sport within the province, considering that it is a rural province.

Clayton Smith (CEO of Limpopo Impala Cricket) with Imfundiso Honest Ngobeni who took home the Limpopo Impala Cricket Clubs – batsman of the promotional league trophy and the Limpopo Impala Cricket Clubs player of the promotional league trophy.

She also said that the department is going to identify four sporting codes that will be prioritised in the province, of which cricket will be one of.

The biggest winners of the evening was Seshego Cricket Club which came out victorious as the Limpopo Impala Cricket Clubs – Premier League winners. Thomas Thema was given a standing ovation for the long service awards for his contribution spanning over 15 years.
