Mayoral race brings the city together

Polokwane Mayor, Thembi Nkadimeng and several municipal councillors joined this year's race on Saturday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, proving to be a shining example for residents.

POLOKWANE – With the aim to encourage people to live a healthy and fit lifestyle as well as raise money for the Mayoral Bursary Fund, the annual 3-in-1 Mayoral Race was born.

Even though late comers were given the chance to register on the day of the race, all early bird participants received a free T-shirt to commemorate the event.

Athletes could participate in the 21,1 km, 10 km and 5 km races with all athletes completing the race receiving a medal. A total of R150 000 in prizes were up for grabs to the winners. There was also an aerobics marathon for those who did not want to take on the races.

Koketjo Gumbo, James Madiba, Elias Mapoonya and Alfred Mamobolo enter the stadium after completing the 21,1 km in the annual 3-in-1 Mayoral Race.

One of the participants, Veronica Fritz, invited her gardener, Jakob legodi, and domestic worker, Salome Mothiba, to take part in the 5 km fun run with her. “This is a wonderful race for a good cause and seeing as this wasn’t the first race we’ve competed in together, we decided to give it a shot,” she said.

At the age of 79, Elizabeth Mahlakuna was one of the oldest participants who finished the 5 km fun run. “I decided to take part in the race to encourage others to do the same, showing them that my age is no excuse not to live a healthy lifestyle,” she said.

Dawid Jordaan and Ronnie Hooi thoroughly enjoy the annual 3-in-1 Mayoral Race.

“Even though I did not complete the race in a record time, I did complete it and am very proud of that. I want to encourage others to join in and take part in such events because it is for a good cause.”

The annual 3-in-1 Mayoral Race was proudly sponsored by Polokwane Athletics Club (PAC), Coca Cola, Park Inn Hotel and Talisman.
