Tshego makes a name for himself on the green

At the age of six, Tshegofatso Nathan Mdhluli is a passionate golfer, inspired by both his parents, Khomotso and Sibusiso, who are professional golfers.

POLOKWANE – Originally from Mbombela (Nelspruit) in Mpumalanga, Tshego and his family moved to Polokwane in 2013 for work purposes.

Tshego attends school at PEPPS where he plans to stay and complete his matric.

“When I turned six in May last year, my dad bought me a set of golf clubs and I began taking the sport seriously. I used to practice with his golf clubs but now I had a set of my own. Golf is an interesting sport and I have learnt many things from my coach such as improving my concentration, ” Tshego said.

He added he loves golf because it is a fun way to keep busy. He enjoys watching golf on TV with his dad. His favourite golfers are Rory McIlroy who has won was world number one in the Official World Golf Ranking for 95 weeks, and Jason Day who is a former world number one in the World Golf Rankings as well. “I love the way they play as they are very professional. Even though my parents are my biggest role models, these professional golfers motivate and inspire me to become a better golfer, one of the world’s best someday.”

Tshego plays golf on weekends and sometimes competes in mini-golf competitions. He recently competed in the Review Longest Drive, on association with PanSolutions, on Saturday, 14 April. He won the prize for the best chip, landing a two-night stay at Bolivia Lodge.

“I’m taking my dad with me for the stay as we always attend golf events together. We will get my mom a special treat soon as well,” he said.

Aside from golf, Tshego enjoys karate and soccer.

“My parents are highly supportive of my sport choices and their support encourages me to do my best in everything I do. I manage to find balance between my schoolwork and sport thanks to my support network. My parents always help me with my homework and when I’m in class my academics has my full attention, the same goes for when I’m on the sportsfield, then sport has my full attention.”
