‘116-year-old’ caught cheating at CDM 4-in-1 race

The annual Capricorn District Municipality (CDM) 4-in-1 Race ended on a conflicting note when athletes accused a runner in the top 10 of cheating.

POLOKWANE – According to information from social media which race organisers corroborated, one of the runners, Ludwick Mamabolo, confronted the runner, asking him where he came from and how he managed to “come out of nowhere” to finish in the top 10 when no one saw him compete in the race.

Shortly after the confrontation, the man and his manager left.

“We know the people who run in front and behind us and this man was nowhere to be found during the race.

“There was a suspicious car and it was later said the runner came out of the vehicle close to the end of the race to finish it,” Mamabolo said on a social media post.

Polokwane Athletics Club (PAC) Chairperson, Corrie Calitz, told Review, upon further investigation, it was found the man had an identification number that stated he was born in 1902.

“It was obvious this man intended to cheat from the start. His contact number was also not listed or working. The man was disqualified and the runners who completed the race were given their rightful place,” Calitz said.

He added people cheating is sadly, nothing new and the only way to stop this from happening is by having runners wear a chip.

This is, however, a costly affair and for now they rely on runners’ honesty, he said.

CDM Spokesperson, Moffat Senyatsi, told Review the matter was brought to the attention of the municipality and the race organisers, the Polokwane Athletics Club.

“We were made aware of the situation and disqualified from the race. We will never condone cheating, especially when it comes to a race of this magnitude.

“We urge runners to bring forward more information on these type of issues in the future as no cheating will be tolerated,” Senyatsi said.
