Top female boxer nominated for SA boxing award

Well-known female boxer from the Giyani Boxing Club (GBC), Bukiwe Anaconda Nonina, is waving the Limpopo flag high with another nomination for the best female boxer title at the SA Boxing Awards.

LIMPOPO – The awards ceremony is set to take place on 2 February and Nonina has her sights set on bringing the award home again like she did in 2016.

Nonina is a World Boxing Federation (WBF) and South Africa bantamweight champion and will weigh in against Mapule Ngubane and Noni Tenge for the prestigious award.

She said she feels honoured to be nominated for the award which she dedicates to her fans in Giyani who have supported her since the beginning of her career.

“This is a blessing. This award doesn’t necessarily mean I fight better than the other boxers or that I am more clever, it is a reward for the hard work and commitment I put in at the gym every day,” she said.

“It is slightly overwhelming to be recognised for the good work I do and I am confident I will scoop the award once more.”

Her trainer, Emmanuel Mutavhatsindi, applauded her for being nominated once more and wished her good luck.

“I’m so proud of Nonina. She is disciplined and a hard worker, she never misses training and always gives 100%. I’m positive she will win the award,” he said.

Mopani Mayor, Nkakareng Rakgaole, said she was proud of Nonina’s nomination, adding she hopes Nonina will continue to put Mopani on the map.

“I’m so happy for our golden girl, Bukiwe Nonina. She has been doing well and we hope the youth around Mopani will emulate and follow in her footsteps as Mopani is a home of talent,” Rakgoale said.

In November last year, Nonina defended her WBF title against Moleboweng Mothathi during a thrilling match in Welkom, Free State. Later this year, in June, Nonina will defend her title against Alesia Graf, a German boxer who Nonina defeated last year to become the WBF champion.
