Teacher inspires kids to take part in sport

POLOKWANE – The majority of learners are encouraged and expected to participate in one or more types of sport.

Flora Park Comprehensive Primary School Sports organiser, and school teacher Frans Manaka, discussed the importance of sport for learners at the school.

Manaka says sport is an essential and important activity for learners because it provides exposure and discipline, and develops and encourages talent.

“Sport keeps them healthy and also builds team spirit.”

He adds that learners qualify to participate in various types of sport, but must have passion, dedication, the will to learn, as well as the ability to concentrate and pay attention. “We have competed in most sports with other schools, and of five soccer matches played, won three and lost two. Our school soccer league match still has to be played and I know our boys will make us proud.”

Manaka says every learner is encouraged to take part in sport as it is beneficial to them, one being that their concentration levels improve in the classroom.

“We also encourage the learners not to only concentrate on their sport, but also encourage them to focus on their school work, as that comes first.”

“Those who are lax and do not do well in their schoolwork, are given suspension for a period of two weeks as a way of disciplining them, while we observe,” he said. He concluded by saying sport reduces the risk of obesity, increases the learners’ cardiovascular fitness, keeps them healthy in growth of their bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons, and also improves coordination and balance.
