Stepping to life’s rhythmic beat

For Liandra da Silva (11), dance is a platform where she can be herself and shake off her shyness.

POLOKWANE -Her mother, Sonia, agrees, saying it is a stage on which her daughter truly blossoms.

Liandra, a Gr 6 learner at PEPPS Preparatory School, started dancing three years ago.

“She was always dancing in the house, all by herself and some of my friends suggested that I enrol her for dancing classes.

“She started dancing at the Universe of Rhythm and Dance and she did well.

“She competed for the South African rankings last year and ended first.

“Liandra also participated in the Limpopo Championships last year.”

Liandra adds the South African Championships, and the Reunion competitions to her list of trophies.

“I dance different styles – Latin, Classic and Energy. My favourite is Energy.

“I love to dance and I love losing myself in the music.”

Sonia explains that Liandra often floats around like a fairy in the house, and besides dancing, also competes in swimming and hockey at school.

“Dancing surely does not run in the family, so we are especially proud of her.

“We only dance at events like weddings and special gatherings, but she is the first to dance in competitions,” her mom says.

“Dancing is not difficult at all and comes naturally for me. I will not pursue a career in it, but I would like to continue with it as a sport,” says Liandra.

This year she is scaling down somewhat as she would like to concentrate more on her schoolwork.
