SA golfers strut their stuff in Polokwane

Golfers from across South Africa visited the Polokwane Golf Club to show their mettle in the 72-hole Provincial Women's Golf Championship.

POLOKWANE – The championship took place from 21 to 25 May with the golfers from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) repeating their winning performance in Mossel Bay three years ago.

Altogether 12 provincial teams took to the fairway in a stroke play format, played in two divisions, the A Division (Swiss Team Trophy) and the B Division (Challenge Trophy).

The Swiss Team Trophy teams were: Boland A, Border, Ekurhuleni A, Gauteng North A, Gauteng North B, Gauteng North C, Gauteng A and B, KZN A, Southern Cape, and Western Province A and B. The Challenge Trophy competitors were Limpopo, Boland B, Eastern Province, Ekurhuleni B, Free State, Gauteng C, KZN B, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, North West A, and Western Province C.

Gauteng’s Kaleigh Telfer, who aided Gauteng to second on 580, was second on even par 288 and Caitlyn Macnab, who helped Ekurhuleni to third on 585, finished third on 291.

Brittney-Fay Berger from KZN, who played some great golf to finish in a tie for fourth on 293, was over the moon to share in the team’s victory. The KZN A team trailed by two shots and Ekurhuleni A team was a further stroke back, but successive rounds of 144 for KZN on Tuesday saw the 2014 champions overhaul the Gauteng A team and finish in pole position alongside Ekurhuleni A team, who combined for a second round 143 and posted 144 in the third round, when Gauteng A set the pace with an opening 144.

The teams had a practice round on Sunday, 21 May and played 18 holes stroke play on Monday, 22 May; 36 holes stroke play on Tuesday, 23 May; and 18 holes stroke play on Wednesday, 24 May.

On Wednesday 25 May, Sally Greasley, Women’s Golf South Africa’s President and MC for the day, thanked everyone who came to showcase their skills.

The Western Province golfers Kelly Erasmus, Kaylah Williams, Aaliyah Abrahams, Jessica Green, Katia Shaff, Zayb Fredericks, Jordan Rothman, Odette Booysen, and Ashleigh Mills.
