SA Swimming Champs to make a splash

The South African School Sport Swimming Championship was officially opened at Jack Botes Hall last Sunday.

POLOKWANE – Sports and Recreation Minister, Thulsa Nxesi, made the official announcement of the event hosted by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the Department of Education.

Swimming teams from Limpopo, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, and North West attended the official opening and competed in the championships last week.

Sport MEC, Onicca Moloi, said: “We have agreed that we’re going to work together in improving our athletes in Limpopo and we will maintain the sports facilities we have in order to do so. Tonight, sport has proven it has the power to unite and bring people together. We want to congratulate and thank the parents for their support as it is your support which motivates these children to do their best”.

Education MEC, Ishmael Kgetjepe, welcomed everyone to the opening ceremony.

“It is an honour to host the teams from provinces across South Africa. We believe through this event we are not only shaping the leaders of tomorrow, we are also shaping the champions of the future,” he said.

The Muzo Brothers offered top notch entertainment with their music and songs for the guests, showing everyone how much talent Limpopo has to offer.

Swimming South Africa President, Alan Fritz, said it is their priority to develop the potential of children across the country.

“Healthy bodies house healthy minds and we thank everyone for giving us the opportunity to help develop the potential of the youth. We wish all the swimmers the best for their upcoming races,” Fritz said.

The championship was held from 10 to 13 April with the medal standings on 13 April at:

1. Gauteng – 126.

2. KZN – 88.

The KZN swimming team.

3. Free State – 31.

The Free State swimming team.

4. Mpumalanga – 33.

5. Eastern Cape – 22.

6. Limpopo – 23.

The Limpopo Aquatics swimming team.

7. Western Cape – 31.

The Western Cape swimming team.

8. North West – 8.
