POLOKWANE – Lutendo Mapoto victoriously crossed the finish line in first position in the Cape Peninsula 42,2 km Marathon.

The Pietersburg Road Runners (PRR) yet again boasted with their dominant athletes this past Sunday in Cape Town when four of them went to compete against a whopping total of about 3 500 athletes.

The Cape Town Peninsula Marathon is one of South Africa’s oldest and biggest marathons which makes these athletes’ performances an exceptional feat.

Not only did the PRR bag the individual trophy with Lutendo, they were also the top Amateur Club at the marathon. Lutendo ran a winning time of 02:27,36, while Timothy Munzhelele took sixth place with a time of 02:35,27. Calvin Malatji took seventh place with a time of 02:37,50 and Johan van der Merwe (PRR founder and coach) took 26th place with a time of 02:57,05. He also placed fourth in the male 40 to 49 age category.

“We ran this race in some challenging weather conditions and our times were still exceptional, I am very proud of my fellow runners,” said Van der Merwe.

He added they took the runners to this marathon because it has similar conditions to the Two Oceans Marathon, which will take place later this year.

“With their performance this past weekend, I am sure that they will do well in the Two Oceans, as we aim for the individual first place as well as the best amateur club prize,” he said.
