Mastering the discipline of dance

Ballet is characterised by precise and highly formalised movements and this dance enthusiast is teaching others the principles of the sport.

POLOKWANE – Local ballet teacher, Molatelo Kgwantha, has danced into the hearts of many and is teaching young, gifted dancers in the city to do the same.

Originally from Lephalale, Molatelo now calls Bendor in Polokwane home and coaches ballet at the Polokwane Cricket Club. She realised her passion at a very young age and has danced since the age of four.

Her passion for dance encouraged her to study ballet, jazz, and Spanish dance at Pro Arte Alphen Park, an art school in Pretoria East after she completed high school.

Molatelo Kgwantha demonstrates style and grace.

“My mom said when I was four years old I came home from pre-school one day, form in hand, and said I wanted to do ballet.

“She agreed and I have pursued my passion ever since,” she explains.

She says she is absolutely blessed and fortunate to have had the opportunities she has with the support of her family.

“As a little girl it looked pretty and fun, but growing up it helped me become disciplined as I challenged my body with the elaborate moves.”

Molatelo believes that ballet, and dancing in general, firmly builds our body structure and posture.

Along with that, she believes if one can do ballet, you will be able to do any other dance form as it helps build self-confidence in your body and helps you better physically understand your body.

“It helps with physical strength, flexibility, maintains good posture, tones our bodies and teaches us musicality.

My students range from ages of four up until high school level, and we currently only have girls in our club, hopefully boys we will welcome boys to the school soon,” Molatelo adds.

She believes people must explore as many dance disciplines as possible and stick with the ones they love the most. “Perfect it and create your own masterpiece,” she concludes.
