Lim’s wheelchair tennis darlings aim for top spot

KG and Maripa head to the Prague Cup with high hopes

LIMPOPO – Two of South Africa’s top seed wheelchair players, Kgothatso KG Montjane and Evans Maripa, just wrapped up an excursion to the Bath Indoor Tournament in Bath, Great Britain and are presently embarking on the Prague Cup, an ITF level two Tournament taking place in Prague, Czech Republic.

The two Limpopo stars hope to build on their stunning performances at last year’s event where they reached the finals. The 26-year-old Maripa fought and showed great composure, but was knocked out by Japanese world number 11, Takuya Miki.

“After every tournament I always come home to regroup and work hard to better my game, so I am going to Europe with a polished game plan and hope to perform better than last year,” Maripa said. The 30-year-old Montjane was also denied the singles title last year in Prague by world number seven, Diede De Groot, in the women’s final. “It is a great feeling to end the year on a high note, so I will play my best in Europe with the hope for better results,” Montjane said.

“I have had enough time to rest and put more in work on the court since my last tournament in early October, so I have prepared well for the challenge.”

Participation in these events is made possible by the game sponsor, Airports Company South Africa, who has been the major sponsor of Wheelchair Tennis South Africa (WTSA) for the past 11 years.
