Pieter Pretorius on how to prepare for big races

Review asked this seasoned runner how others who are just starting out should prepare for a big race.

POLOKWANE – Pieter Pretorius is a seasoned ultra-marathon runner who has competed in multiple 160 km races. He also competed in eight comrades marathons, winning three silver medals in this grueling race.

Review asked this seasoned runner how others who are just starting out should prepare for a big race.

“It is important for runners to have their gear ready for the big day. This is something most people overlook. Ensure your shoes are fitted right and they’re comfortable and that you pack your gear in advance to avoid leaving anything behind,” Pieter said.

According to Pieter, if you are not a seasoned runner, it is advisable that you train with experienced runners, doing so will help you get used to running in a group and how to pace yourself when running long distances.

“You must exercise regularly. Don’t overdo it, start small,”he advised. “The important thing is that you work out a schedule and stick to it to get your body used to running long distances. You’re not a professional athlete, you can’t run each and every day of the week but try to train three times a week,” Pieter continued.

He said one of the main reasons runners get injured during races is because they attempt to do too much too soon, which puts immense strain on the body. “Don’t do sprints, run at a consistent pace for longer distances. Start slowly and set realistic goals. Be a happy runner, greet people along the way and encourage other runners who might be struggling along the way. Happy runners always do better,” Pieter concluded.
