Fun walk promotes healthy living

In an effort to promote exercise and a healthy lifestyle, the Department of Education in the Vhembe region organised a 9 km fun walk recently.

LIMPOPO -The fun walk was open to everyone and started at Manenu Traffic College and ended in Tshilamba in Mutale.

One of the organisers from the Department of Education, Mukondeleli Makhari, said the department saw a need to encourage everyone, especially educators, to embrace a healthy lifestyle in an effort to reduce the high stress levels prevalent in the occupation. It served a dual purpose to help raise awareness of reducing the chances of developing illnesses like diabetes and high blood pressure due to living an unhealthy lifestyle.

Makhari added that educators and employees of the department had the opportunity to receive free tests for various illnesses at the walk.

“The fun walk is part of our effort to encourage our educators to exercise. We believe healthy bodies house healthy minds, something that is essential for everyone to do their job to the best of their ability,” Makhari explained. She encouraged employees to take part in events such as the fun walk to help them stay fit and healthy.

One of the educators who participated in the fun walk, Thiathu Netshikweta, said he was happy to take part in the walk.

He said for many of the participants, taking part in events such as the fun walk is the only exercise they get.

“This walk will encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle and to make a positive change which will contribute to a conducive working environment for all,” Netshikweta said.
