SAPS connect with the youth through sport

As protectors of the city, the Polokwane Police took the initiative to tackle crime in the city by hosting a "Sport Against Crime" sports day at Capricorn High School on Saturday.

POLOKWANE – The day saw learners from different schools play soccer and netball as well as debating. Teams tackled issues such as drugs and the effects thereof. Police Spokesperson, Capt Ntobeng Phala, says the day coincided with the ‘Take a Girl to Work’ Initiative set up by Cell C which intends to educate and encourage learners about the work environment and leadership skills that go hand in hand with that workplace. Phala says the sports day was organised to try and get the youth off the streets and doing something constructive. He also mentioned how most petty crimes are committed by the youth and not street kids. “We realised it was time to tackle the issue and knock some sense into the youth, and what better way than through sport,” he says.

Phala also mentioned the measures the police are going to take to try and deal with drug usage among the youth. “We have strategies in place with activities that will not interfere with learning, or interrupt it,” he says.
