Provincial basketball u/20 squad promise a grand show

IN Limpopo, football is emperor and basketball is king following the waning of softball traditions

POLOKWANE – This basketball flair will be on display at the University of Limpopo (UL) during the inaugural May Day Tournament this Saturday.

Over 10 teams have already confirmed their participation to give local fans glimpses of brilliance on the court.

The one-day event will feature, among others, the hosting side, UL Bull Dogs, Seshego Sonics A and B, Malamulele Chill Shooters, Mahwelereng Vikings, Polokwane Hawks, Solomondale Pacers A and B, Capricorn High School, Lebowakgomo Rasplaas and the provincial u/20 side.

Of all the teams, all eyes will be on the provincial u/20’s, a star-studded side that has become a threat to bigger teams in the province.

The team includes the ‘Three Musketeers’ in the firing squad, shooting guards David Moloto and Kgaogelo Sathekge, with power forward, Vladimir Matlou. They are expected to pin their faith in Nyiko Marima, their very last line of defense.

Moloto, the talismanic Sonics powerhouse, remains the team’s anchorman to provide the catalyst for comprehensive match-wining.

Among those who have the boys’ respect is Pacers mentor, Phetolo Mahana, who spoke highly of the fulcrum of the team ahead of this weekend’s tournament.

“I have seen these boys in action and quite frankly I take my hat off to them. I have more reason to respect them because they are still young.

“They have a frightening pace and complement each other all over the court. Their game is exciting with unmatched basketball intelligence. They are great thinkers capable of turning any situation to the advantage,” says Mahana.

Moloto says he is upbeat that they will do well this Saturday.

“I have no doubt that we will give a good account of ourselves. What puts us at ease is that we know our opponents well. We are accustomed with their game plan and nothing will stop us from dismantling them.

“The fact that they have great respect for us makes us even deadlier. Come Saturday, fans will be treated to great basketball. It will be our day to prove that our recent run of victories was no fluke.”
