Baragwanath aims to showcase his talent in championship race

Brian Baragwanath, Dakar and National Off-Road Quad champion, will compete in the Donaldson Cross Country Motor Racing Championship in Vredefort tomorrow (Saturday).

POLOKWANE – Sponsored by Imperial Isuzu Trucks Isando and Century Racing, the event will offer Baragwanath an opportunity to test different waters when it comes to off-road racing as well as give his fans a taste of what can be expected from the quad champion.

Baragwanath said it has always been his dream to race cars and now he has been offered an opportunity to show everyone what he is capable of.

Baragwanath will compete in the Century Racing CR-T, which is known as one of the most affordable but prestige cars in the off-road racing market.

The car retails for around R600 000, and is equipped with a 4.0L Lexus V8 engine and Sax suspension.

Century Racing has sent South African cars to the Dakar Rally twice and completed the race first in the two-wheel drive petrol class and 17th overall, with driver Mark Corbett.

Baragwanath said: “The CR-T is super strong and exhilarating to drive. I am excited for the opportunity to drive this incredible machine at my first car national. I have high hopes, because the car has great potential.”

Baragwanath who has been racing quads for 17 years has claimed a podium position and three stage wins on his Yamaha Raptor 700 at the 2016 Dakar Rally and hopes to gain enough sponsors to compete again in the 2017 Dakar Rally. The Dakar Rally is the toughest off-road rally in the world, covering 9 000 km over 14 days.

Baragwanath, who is also a qualified mechanical engineer, said it takes a good car or bike, perseverance and consistency to win big tournaments and get to shine on the podium.

“One needs reliable sponsorship to be able to compete in national and international championships. I would like to urge young people to study hard and chase after their dreams to succeed,” he said.

Companies that wish to sponsor Baragwanath can visit the Team Rhide SA website at www.teamrhidesa.com or on their Facebook page.
