More in store as Nedbank Cup progresses to quarter-finals

Speculation is rife that the National First Division (NFD) side, Baroka FC will continue to dominate the giants when they lock horns with Polokwane City FC at the Nedbank Cup quarter-final derby

POLOKWANE – The derby will take place on 23 and 24 April at the Peter Mokaba Sports Complex.

Baroka FC have knocked out premier division teams, Chippa United and Lamontville Golden Arrows to reach this stage of the competition, while Rise and Shine trumped Platinum Stars.

Baroka is the last remaining team from outside the NFD in this year’s tournament. The coach, Kgoloko Thobejani, is determined that the team will claim the trophy come the final on 28 May.

They are joined in the quarterfinals by some of the soccer heavyweights such as eight-time winners, Orlando Pirates, who booked their place in the quarter-finals with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Jomo Cosmos, while Mamelodi Sundowns ousted NFD team Mbombela United with a 3-1 victory.

Bidvest Wits were too strong for third-tier Magesi FC as they enjoyed a 6-0 success in Polokwane, with Daine Klate securing four goals for his team.

This win allowed his team to shoot to the top of the Nedbank Cup chart for 2016.

Polokwane City surprised spectators with an extra-time victory against Platinum Stars. Mpumalanga Black Aces, Free State Stars and SuperSport United will also appear in the quarterfinals.

Nedbank uses the sponsorship as an opportunity to enable its existing and potential clients to stand a chance of making their dreams come true by winning their share of R7 million by simply dialling *120*762# and sharing what really matters to them.

The competition has already started and will end in September, coinciding with the electrifying finale of the Nedbank Ke Yona team, which will take on the 2016 Nedbank Cup champions.

The venues for the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals will be announced in due course.
