‘Passion and hard work are necessary to succeed’ – Leandré

Leandré du Preez took home a gold medal during the Zone 5 Mini Trampoline Championships recently.

POLOKWANE – Local gymnast, Leandré du Preez from Zanis Gymnastic Academy, was part of the national gymnastics team that represented the country during the Zone 5 Mini Trampoline Competition that was held at the Jonibach Trampoline Centre in Pretoria recently.

Leandré received her South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF) colours last October and this increased her chance of being part of the national team. Team South Africa won various gold medals after accumulating a high number of points against Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Namibia and Angola.

She has been taking part in gymnastics for 10 years and has received many medals at various South African gymnastics championships.

Leandré started her gymnastics career at Zanis Gymnastics Academy at the age of three years, while she still attended Werk en Wen Kleuterskool.

“I use the sport to relax and refresh my mind after a long day at school.”

Leandré said this latest championship was by no means a walk in the park but she did her best and got the opportunity to ascend the stage to collect her gold medal.

“I was scared at first but the anxiety faded away as soon as I started performing. I developed a love and passion for this sport when I was very young. I am not doing it for money or fame. I just want to share the talent I have with the world and inspire would-be gymnasts,” she explained.

She further opined that athletes who have a passion for what they do do not brag about their achievements because they do not compete against anyone but themselves.

“I would like to thank Zanis Gymnastics Academy for the support and good lessons over the years. The academy taught me top gymnastics skills and techniques,” she said.

She further urged youngsters to love what they do and believe in God to get to the top and become the best.

Her wish is to participate in the Olympics one day to show the world what she is capable of.

“Passion, dedication and hard work are necessary to succeed in anything.”
