POLOKWANE – Capricorn District boys’ basketball team proved to be on top of their game and managed to claim the first position during the 2015 Provincial Club Development Championships.
This annual tournament was hosted by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and took place at the University of Limpopo sporting grounds from 1 to 4 December.
The Capricorn District team went home with a trophy and gold medals while Vhembe District claimed silver medals and the Mopani District received bronze medals.
In the girls’ basketball matches, Waterberg District took home the trophy and gold medals after being announced as the overall winners.
Capricorn District received silver medals for second position and Vhembe District took home bronze medals for third position.
Sports and recreation general manager, Veronica Choshane, said the tournament had a successful turnout.
“We have seen a lot of talent in all the sporting codes and we are happy citizens came to support this initiative. Sporting codes such as rugby and cricket are known to be famous in communities but we are proud the children from rural areas have now come on board and are counted among the best players in these two sporting codes,” explained Choshane.
She further said Vhembe District was the only one excelling in boxing but the wheels have turned as Sekhukhune and Mopani Districts managed to get good boxing results this year. This shows other districts are also interested in the sport and are willing to learn.
Choshane also said they look forward to hosting the Provincial Club Development Championships again next year and the department will ensure they involve as many young stars as possible. She added they are happy the sports federations in the province also came on board to support the tournament. She further congratulated Capricorn and Waterberg District for being the 2015 Provincial Club Development Championships basketball champions.

• Most Valuable Player – Boshomane Joyce (Capricorn District).
• All-stars Team – Felicia Machimane, Nkateko Marima, Millicent Lebepe and Matshidiso Motau.
Boys basketball
• Most Valuable Player – Eddy Ledwaba (Capricorn District).
• All-stars Team – Thembani Shirinda, Nkateko Shivhambu, Kgaugelo Sathekge and Alli Teffo.
