14-year-old karateka gets her senior black belt

After five years of hard work and dedication, Gadima Seriti (14) a student of the JKA Karate Club, has finally graded to senior black belt.

POLOKWANE – After five years of hard work and dedication, a local karateka, Gadima Seriti (14) of the JKA Karate Club, has finally graded to senior black belt under South African JKA Karate chief instructor, Johan la Grange (6th Dan).

The grading ceremony was held on 30 October in Modimolle.

Seriti participated in the Africa Cup Tournament on 26 September in Johannesburg. The tournament served as preparation prior to the grading tournament.

She said she has worked very hard to obtain the belt and finally got the chance to earn it.

“You have to start somewhere in order to get to the top and to be recognised as the best in whatever you do. The hard work I put into the sport has started to pay off and I will continue to stay dedicated to achieve all my goals,” said Seriti.

She added she aims to be bold and vocal like Oprah Winfrey, but making use of karate instead.

Seriti thanked her instructor, sensei Piet van Rensburg (6th Dan) for his continued support. She said Van Rensburg is a good teacher who keeps her motivated.

Van Rensburg said Seriti did exceptionally well during the grading tournament and he is very proud of her.

“She is a very good karateka and she puts all her effort in whatever she does. I see a bright future ahead of her.”

Seriti’s mother, Mpho, explained karate keeps her daughter away from bad habits. She is happy to see her excel.

“I knew my daughter was on her way to a black belt as she is committed and passionate about karate. I am very proud of her even though I was a bit scared at first when she started karate.

“Now she has proved she really loves the sport and it has helped her to focus in other aspects of her life as well,” said Mpho.
