LIMPOPO – COMMUNITIES in and around the Vhembe region were urged to participate in sport to reduce the chances of people getting involved in crime and alcohol abuse.

The request came from Theo Muthevhuli, the manager of Broadway Eating House during the prize-giving ceremony of the Broadway Snooker Tournament, which was held on Saturday at Matopo Lakes Garden in Ha-Mutsha village outside Thohoyandou.

The teams that participated in the tournament received trophies, medals and certificates.

“We found that when people had nothing to do over the weekend, they ended up doing crime or abusing alcohol. Playing games such as snooker helps with healthy socialising and players end up making friends,” said Muthevhuli.

Acting chairperson of the Vhembe Pool Association, Peter ‘Livenda’ Muravha, said the motto of the association was very clear: ‘zero tolerance against crime’, and it was their believe that if people played snooker during weekends, it would discourage them from committing crime and abusing alcohol.

“Snooker is played on business premises and it is a good way for owners to promote their businesses as players eat and drink refreshments bought from the business. We also encourage owners of the business where the game is played to supply free food for the players,” said Muravha.

The Matopo Lakes Garden team won, and the manager, Tshifhiwa Mululuma was very excited to be crowned the victor.

“The game makes us develop strong and lasting friendships and we are able to travel to all corners of Limpopo. Since we are no longer able to play soccer, snooker is the ideal sport for us because we are older,” said Mululuma.

Livenda Muravha appealed to the community to help sponsor the snooker tournaments and those willing to do so can contact him at 072 126 0267.
