Dylan ready for golf Olympics

Dylan Melville (11) will proudly represent South Africa at the Junior Golf Olympics that will be held in the US on July 15.

POLOKWANE – Dylan Melville (11) will proudly represent South Africa at the Junior Golf Olympics that will be held in the US on July 15.

Dylan qualified for the Olympics after scoring 77 points in all two qualifying rounds during the Olympics qualifying tournament that was held recently.

He said he started taking part in golf when he was only five years old and he is enjoying the sport immensely. “I developed a passion for golf because it is fun and challenging. My dad is the one who introduced me to the sport and I thank him for discovering the potential I have at an early age,” Dylan said.

He added that he had started preparing for the Olympics and he played as if he was already at the Olympics every time he trained. He further said he was over the moon to qualify for the Olympics and would do his best and hopefully get to win a prize.

“I used to play tennis and realised the sport was not for me after playing golf for a couple of days. Golf is a lifetime sport and it is played by all races and age groups,” Dylan said. He added that he would like to become a golf professional one day and fly the South African flag high in world tournaments.

Dylan’s father, Gavin, said he was proud of his son and saw a bright future ahead of him in the sport. Gavin said he started playing golf with his son and now Dylan played way better than him. Dylan will be competing in the All Africa Golf Championship that will take place at Zebula Golf Estate in August.

Dylan said things were coming together for him and he would continue training hard to grab every opportunity coming his way. Dylan urged young people to take part in the sport and do their best so that they could be recognised and get rewarded for their hard work. “Life is full of opportunities, which is why young people should find ways to utilise all the opportunities they get to grow and become better people,” Dylan explained.
