20th Comrades for Magashule

Pinas Magashule (51) of Polokwane Athletics Club says he is ready to run his 20th Comrades Marathon this year.

POLOKWANE – Pinas Magashule (51) of Polokwane Athletics Club says he is ready to run his 20th Comrades Marathon this year.

Magashule started taking part in athletics when he was still in school. “I was excelling in track events such as the 5000 m, 3000 m and 1000 m among others and that is when I realised that I am good at running. I then ventured into long distance runs to try my luck,” said Magashule.

He further said that he would like to run 25 Comrades marathons and then call it quits. Magashule has never finished in the top 10 since he started taking part in the Comrades, he finished on number 102 which he regards as his best place. He will be going for the double green colour this year.

“This time around I am not competing with anyone, but running for fun. I am getting old and I have to take it slow since I am not as strong as before. I am ready to compete against other athletes and I am hoping to get a silver medal for the race,” added Magashule.

When asked about his training programme, Magashule said he does not have a specific training programme due to his harsh work schedule but explained that he trains as often as possible to stay fit and healthy.

He further urged young people to take part in sport to stay fit and follow a healthy lifestyle. According to Magashule, sport can be used to put bread and butter on the table and encouraged young people to participate in sport to have a fallback option in the future.
