POLOKWANE – Lucas Masubelele (54), Polokwane Golf Club bartender will be running his 20th Comrades Marathon this year.

Masubelele is aiming to finish under eight hours and improve his best finish time which is 7:31. He said he has been preparing very hard for the race and he is positive that he will do well and improve his standing.

“I took part in a few Comrades qualifier races and I am positive that I will give my best. I am going for double green colour this year and I am delighted that I managed to get this far. My training programme is in place and I have been doing speed training and long distance training among others,” said Masubelele.

He added that athletes should participate in various races before running the Comrades Marathon and they also need to do quality training when preparing for marathons.

“I started taking part in athletics when I was in school, I remember I used to run to school every morning because I was always late.

“This made me develop a love and passion for athletics, I have been running for more than 38 years now and I am still enjoying it,” he said.

According to Masubelele, sport is not about money but health and he urged young people to participate in sport to stay away from criminal activities.

He further said one can stay away from various diseases if they exercise more often and try to live a healthy lifestyle.

When asked about when he plans on calling it quits, Masubelele said he will continue running until his feet are unable to carry him anymore.
