Tourney promises to be a knockout

WHILE the Mayweather-Pacquiao saga rages on, the focus on the Limpopo boxing landscape will be on the annual Malamulele Boxing Tournament scheduled for Saturday, May 22 in Malamulele.

LIMPOPO – WHILE the Mayweather-Pacquiao saga rages on, the focus on the Limpopo boxing landscape will be on the annual Malamulele Boxing Tournament scheduled for Saturday, May 22 in Malamulele.

The tournamnet, which is conducted under the auspices of the Limpopo Amateur Boxing Organisation, is expected to attract brilliant boxers from all Limpopo’s five districts.

Entry costs R10 for both children and adults.

The presence of boxers from all corners of the province has been confirmed by boxing legend and tournament director, Eric Baloyi.

Baloyi says the tournament will help to instill the love of boxing among youngsters who want to follow in the footsteps of role models such as Cassius Baloyi, Phillip Ndou, Joseph Makaringe and Isaac Hlatshwayo.

Baloyi, who is the father of world-renowned multiple title conqueror, Cassius Baloyi, says Limpopo’s top fighters were discovered in similar tournaments akin to next weekend’s event.

Cassius remains the only South African fighter to win six world titles in three different weight divisions, while Ndou holds the WBU strap. Hlatshwayo is the IBO lightweight and IBO and IBF welterweight champion, while Makaringe is the national welterweight king.

All these fighters, as well as Jeffrey Mathebula, Vincent Vuma and Oscar Chauke, were trained by Baloyi in the amateur ranks.

“This tournament has proven over the years to be a potential breeding ground for enthusiastic boxers. There are great fighters who were discovered at this tournament.

“As the organisers and custodians of this event, we will make sure it continues to produce great boxers who will make our province proud,” he says.

Among the young boxers who are expected to throw their punches are Cedric Hlungwani, Rovhiwa Nemukula, Talent Baloyi, Prince Ndlovu and Lopez Maluleke.

“There is a considerable number of talented boxers in this province. What is need from these boys is hard work, passion and undivided focus. As the custodians of the sport, we will continue to support them in their endeavours.”
