2 athletes off to Portugal for 6th INAS World Half Marathon Championships

"We wish our team great success and we know they will do their best," says Lizzie Vogel, Sasa-II, president.

LIMPOPO – THE sixth International Sports Federation for People with Intellectual Disabilities (Inas) World Half Marathon Championships will take place in Portugal from May 15 to 18.

The half marathon is one of the sporting codes the South African Sports Association for the Intellectually Impaired (Sasa-II) offers and athletes take part in as many road running events as possible throughout the year through the different clubs they belong to.

The South African team will depart on Thursday and return on May 19.

The team consists of three male athletes and one official. Two of the three athletes are from Limpopo.

Rasejakate Pesa from Buchum was placed third in the 3km race in Brazil in 2013 and 11th in Poland in 2014 during the World Cross Country Championships.

Thatuwani Mushiana from Thohoyandou will compete for the first time in the half-marathon at the world championships. He took part in the World Cross Country Championships in 2014 in Poland and obtained eighth position in the 6km race and 10th position position in the 3km race.

The three athletes are entered in the individual and team races.

“We wish our team great success and we know they will do their best,” says Lizzie Vogel, Sasa-II, president.

Ronnie Mohlabi, chairperson for Limpopo Sport Association for the Intellectually Impaired, says he is proud of the athletes and wishes them all the best.

“They are the cream of the long distance runners crop and we know they will not disappoint us,” says Mohlabi.
