POLOKWANE – Eddie Williams proved to be the best male golfer after defeating his opponents and claiming the first spot with 49 points during the Collins Chabane golf challenge that took place at Legends Golf and Safari Resort in Waterberg on Saturday.

Stephany Dames was also recognised and named the champion in the female category after accumulating 35 points.

The Collins Chabane golf challenge is an event held in honour of the late public service and administration minister, Collins Chabane, and is played on the course annually.

The event was organised to raise funds which will be directed towards the Xakani Foundation, initiated by Chabane himself.

Since its inception in 2009, various charity organisations benefitted from the money raised during this initiative.

Golfers from all over the country flocked to the Legends course to support the golf day and showcase their golf skills.

However, some golfers could not finish their game due to rain. Gauteng premier, David Makhura, also honoured the gathering but could not play as he arrived late due to other commitments.

He commented that Chabane was someone who would drive all the way from the airport after a long meeting just to play golf.

“He was a good man and needs to be remembered.

“Let us keep his legacy alive and support the Collins Chabane golf challenge.

“He transformed many families,” he said.

Chabane’s son, Matimba, was honoured with a green jacket by the Limpopo Eagles Golf Association .

Tsakani, Chabane’s daughter, received a framed photo of her father playing golf.

Golfers assured the Chabane family that they would continue supporting the golf day to keep his legacy alive.

Matimba thanked everyone who contributed to making the golf day a success and said it meant a great deal to the Chabane family.

Peet Cilliers, Legends Golf and Safari Resort owner, pledged that they would name the clubhouse after Chabane.
