Eagles catch a trophy

The 2014/15 cricket season came to an end on Sunday with the semi-finals and finals of the Pro-20 Clubs Competition played at the Polokwane Cricket Club.

POLOKWANE – The 2014/15 cricket season came to an end on Sunday with the semi-finals and finals of the Pro-20 Clubs Competition played at the Polokwane Cricket Club.

The semi-finals had to be moved from Saturday to Sunday due to heavy rain and overcast conditions.

Both semi-final matches were played in the morning on the A and B fields, with the final scheduled for the afternoon.

Hornbills Cricket Club, winners of the Letaba region, took on Eagles Cricket Club who came second in the central region. Hornbills won the toss and elected to bowl first on a very lively wicket. Eagles scored 162/6 in 20 overs thanks to a quick-fire 54 (31) from Landre Coetzee who was supported by Bradley Pieterse and Kgoshi Leopeng who scored 42 (23) and 25 (22) respectively.

Gavin Dorfling was the pick of the Hornbills bowlers taking 4/33 in four overs. In reply Hornbills could only manage 131 all out. Christopher Atherstone fought a lonely battle in pursuit of the Eagles total.

Pieterse took 4/26 in 3.2 overs while Christo Van Zyl took 3/24 in four overs. Eagles won the game with 31 runs and proceeded to the finals.

The other semi-final was played between Aces Cricket Club who won the central region and Limpopo Strikers who won the Waterberg region. Aces won the toss and elected to field first. Strikers scored 128/6. Aces went into bat and scored the runs in 16.3 overs. Andrew Galloway who was playing his second last match top scored with 74 (54) not out.

Aces won by six wickets qualifying for the finals.

The finals were contested between Eagles Cricket Club and Aces Cricket Club both from Polokwane.

Aces won the toss and decided to bat first and scored 134/8. Amie Smit 45 (37) and Stebian Van Der Walt 40 (31). Pieter Haasbroek took a brilliant 5/17 in four overs. Eagles went into bat and chased the score down with ease with only four wickets tumbling. Pieterse was the chief destroyer with a blistering score of 46 (36) and was well supported by Theo Janse van Rensburg and Petri de Kock 32 (25).

Eagles won by six wickets and were crowned the 2014/15 Limpopo Impala Cricket Pro-20 Club Champions.

This adds the second trophy of the season to their trophy cabinet having captured the Premier League season earlier.
