Squish, squash spectacular

POLOKWANE – Limpopo’s number one squash player, Erick Welman battled it out on the court against South Africa’s number three and world number 130, Christo Potgieter during a warm-up match that took place at the Polokwane Squash Club on Saturday.

The match between the two was part of the squash referee course that was held by Squash South Africa referee, Sven van Rie.

In one of the matches played, Potgieter proved why he is number three in SA by defeating Welman 12-10.

Van Rie said the course focused on a better understanding of squash rules and laws.

“We host the referee course on request and this was the second time we hosted it in Polokwane. Limpopo has a lot of talent and I would encourage squash coaches and referees to host such gatherings more often to know more about the sport. These kind of courses help squash enthusiasts to get to know their sport better,” said Van Rie.

Welman said facing one of South Africa’s best was a good experience and he learned a lot from the experience. He added that the matches he played against Potgieter were tough and he realised that one needs to be fast and fit to be considered one of the best.
