Mountain of cycle fun

The Cycle Centre MTB XCO was held on Saturday, April 11.

LOUIS TRICHARDT – The Cycle Centre MTB XCO was held on Saturday, April 11.

A total of 64 cyclists took part in the event, conquering the newly improved Olympic Cross Country track which Johan van Dijkhorst and the young members of the Soutpansberg Youth Cycling Development built over the last few months.

Sunny weather made way for a successful event, with parents and spectators able to view the race from various points along the 6km route. Marshalls from P&L Cycling Club spent the day directing cyclists on the different routes.

An easier track was prepared for the younger kids, as well as the women, with the men enjoying all the ‘booms’, ‘table-tops’ and ‘drop offs’.

First, second and third prizes were given to all 23 race categories, with Kombo Bere (00:19:06) and Wendy Cambell (00:32:18) recording the fastest lap times of the day.

First places results for the MTB XCO for men:

• Master men – Paul Wilkinson 01:38:37

• Junior men – Kombo Bere 01:17:47

• Elite men – Marc van Zyl 01:20:46

• Sub veteran men – Nico Geldenhuys 01:34:31

• Veteran men – Casper Venter 01:32:39

First place results for the MTB XCO for women:

• Junior women – Chanté du Plessis 01:42:34

• Sub veteran women – Wendy Campbell 01:39:57

• Veteran women – Christie Thomas 01:52:17

Race administrator Renda Alexander thanked the following sponsors: Neels Kruger from Total Capricorn, Rasool brothers from Cycle Centre and Vonitel.

“To all the marshalls, parents, Maud Myburg (medics), Rina and Estelle (food), as well as the personnel from Komatiland Forestry and P&L Cycling Club members, we hope to see you all at our next great XCO event on June 14,” she said.
