SESHEGO – SESHEGO Sonics basketball team returned from Pretoria with a swagger and upon arrival in Limpopo, they were treated like a military battalion that had just won a major war.

The senior women and u/18 men’s teams, under the tutelage of Simon Khoza, both finished as runners-up at the annual Mamelodi Easter Basketball Tournament against some of the the best teams in the country.

The women and u/18’s lost to Pretoria-based outfit Nyoso and Mamelodi Bees, respectively.

The tournament, which has been in existence for 40 years, is where Basketball South Africa finds players for its national sides.

The competition is regarded as one of the most prestigious events on Basketball South Africa’s calendar, it has featured teams from the neighbouring Botswana, Swaziland, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Although lost in the final hurdle, they gave a good account of themselves as the most promising side in the country.

The team is made up of players in the 16- and 17-year age bracket and some will still be eligible to play in the 2017 event.

In a post tournament interview, Khoza named his charges, whose heights range between 1,4m and 1,75m, as “the team for the future”.

“The level of experience in this team is fantastic, considering that they are still young. Their game brainpower is already of high standard and dare I say they have a bright basketball future. It is for this reason that I enjoy coaching them because they have intelligent heads on their shoulders,” Khoza said.
