Top of the pops for Sugar Canes

SUGAR Canes were crowned the inaugural champions of the Mabina Foundation Football Tournament after beating Arsenal 3-2 in a closely-contested final played at Sekgopo Sports Complex last weekend.

LIMPOPO – SUGAR Canes were crowned the inaugural champions of the Mabina Foundation Football Tournament after beating Arsenal 3-2 in a closely-contested final played at Sekgopo Sports Complex last weekend.

Barnes Lethanta, Engen Kganyago and Mogale Mohale netted a goal apiece to help Sugar Canes claim the title while an extremely unlucky Arsenal which lost the game despite a good performance, registered two goals through Ndeny Marutha and Mogale Kapa. To reach the finals, Sugar Canes defeated Black Stars 4-2 on penalties following a two-all draw in regulation time in the preliminary stage of the competition followed by another 4-2 win over Mighty Greans in the quarter-finals. In the semi-finals, Sugar Canes narrowly overcame Dikolobe by two goals to one.

Arsenal whipped Movers 3-1 in the semi-finals while Movers came back to win 6-5 against Dikolobe and claim the third spot in the tournament. The champions, Sugar Canes received R25 000 cash prize money, 17 gold medals plus a floating trophy while the runners-up Arsenal received R15 000 cash prize and 17 silver medals.

Movers took home R7000 for coming third while Dikolobe pocketed the fourth prize of R3000.

The tournament’s top goal scorer with eight goals, Khutso Ramasala of Movers won R500 individual prize money and a miniature trophy. Meanwhile, Ramorithi registered a 3-2 penalty shoot-out win over Sekgopo Barcelona to become the winners of the Top 8 Challenge which also took place at Sekgopo Sports Complex last weekend.

Ramorithi booked a place in the finals by overcoming Lebjelola Swallows 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 stalemate while Barcelona walloped Manchester 2-1.

Ramorithi received R1800 for winning the Top 8 Challenge while Barcelona got R 800 for their efforts.
