Back to School Easter Games

Some 16 soccer teams in the province will be competing for a part of R75 000 in prize money during the second edition of the Philly’s Games that will play over the Easter weekend at the Seshego stadium.

POLOKWANE – Some 16 soccer teams in the province will be competing for a part of R75 000 in prize money during the second edition of the Philly’s Games that will play over the Easter weekend at the Seshego stadium.

Philly’s Games which is also known as Easter Back to School tournament is aiming at raising money for the have-nots and also promoting the sport of soccer in rural areas. Philly’s Games originally started in Tembisa and was introduced in Polokwane last year. The tournament is usually held over the Easter weekend in various venues in Polokwane, where 16 teams competed in the u/15 category, 16 teams in the u/17 and 16 teams in the senior category.

Last year the tournament was won by Gunners FC after beating Great North FC 2-1 in the finals. Gunners proceeded to the finals after beating Romans FC with penalty shoot-outs, while Great North FC won the semi-finals with penalty shoot-outs against Saints FC.

According to Philly Mathebula, the founder of the tournament, the money raised during the tournament would assist young people with bursaries, school fees, stationery and school uniforms.

Cameron Barnes, the tournament coordinator said the last year’s edition was well supported and they are looking forward to this year’s edition. He added that they are looking forward to crown the winner of the tournament.

 

The winning team will walk away with R50 000, the

second team with R20 000 and the

third place with R 5000.

 

Teams representatives gathered at the Peter Mokaba Stadium for the games draw on Tuesday evening.
