POLOKWANE – Oscar Mavhunda (24) is a 200 and 400 m athlete with a bright future ahead of him.

Oscar’s personal record for the 200 m is currently an amazing 20,87 seconds and for the 400m an impressive 47,88 seconds.

The world record for the 200 m is 19,19 seconds, Oscar’s best time is 1,68 seconds slower. The world record for the 400 m is 43,18 seconds Oscar’s best is only 4,7 slower.

Oscar says he started training under the tutelage of coach George Mehale at the MEMA Athletics Club last year and improves on his personal best times on a continuous basis.

George says he has seen the pure talent and potential that Oscar has to offer, and Oscar is easily one of his best athletes.

Oscar is currently training five times a week to increase his speed, power, stamina and reaction time. He is preparing for the South African 200 m, 400 m and relay championships on April 11.

“He will do very well at the South African championships, but he will run two to three races a day so we will have to prepare him mentally as well,” says George.

The club members are working hard to find a way to get Oscar to the University of California and the University of Nevada in June or July so that he can compete to win a scholarship at one of these universities.

“It would be great for his career if he wins the scholarship, because he will be exposed to a wide variety of international competitions. He will also receive a top class education to boot,” George explains.

He says Oscar’s time is good enough to get him to these competitions in the US, but he needs financial assistance to make his dreams come true. Potential sponsors can contact George at 071 865 3441.
