Young golf king Dylan in winning golf team

POLOKWANE – Tired but happy, Dylan Melville (10) greeted Review at the door of his home on Monday.

Over the weekend, Dylan represented Gauteng in the South African Kids u/11 Team Annual Challenge at the Serengeti Golf and Wildlife Estate.

“It was a lot of fun and I made some new friends, but I’m very tired as we had to get up early this morning to drive back and I still needed to go to school today, Dylan explains.

“I played in Gauteng’s team as Limpopo do not have a team, and we won!”

The other teams were a combined team from Free State and Northern Cape, Southern Cape, Mphumalanga and Kwa-Zulu Natal. Each team consisted of six players. The players played nine holes on Saturday as bad weather and lightning forced them off the golf course.

On Sunday the weather was a little better and they played 18 holes but the judges only calculated 17 holes’ play.

Dylan says his whole family went with him and supported him. He is very proud of the floating trophy his team won.

Dylan’s parents are very proud of him.

“He makes us proud by giving the best he can and succeeding so well,” Gavin, his father, says.

Dylan says he started playing golf when he was five years old. His younger brother, Ryan, also plays and they are part of SA Kids Golf.

The next big competition Dylan will take part in will be the All of Africa tournament in August where players from all over Africa will compete to be part of the team that will go to the US next year.

Dylan expresses his delight that he can go and practise golf that day, as he is not writing any tests the next day.
