POLOKWANE – Soccer teams in Limpopo are geared for the second edition of the Philly’s Games, which will be held at the Seshego Stadium from April 3 to 6.
The tournament is usually held over the Easter weekend in various venues in Polokwane, where teams compete in the u/15, u/17 and senior categories.
Gunners FC won the tournament last year after they beat Great North FC 2-1 in the finals.
According to Philly Mathebula, the founder of the tournament, Philly’s Games raised money for charity and promoted soccer in rural areas.
He said the tournament started in Tembisa and was introduced in Polokwane last year.
“The money raised during the tournament will assist young people with bursaries, school fees, stationery and school uniforms,” said Mathebula.
Cameron Barnes, the tournament coordinator, said last year’s edition was well supported and they looked forward to this year’s tournament. He added that they planned to make the tournament big this year, even though they still could not afford to accommodate women’s soccer and netball teams.
Teams are urged to start affiliating to secure a place in the tournament. U/15 teams can affiliate for R200, u/17 for R300, while senior teams can affiliate for R2 100.
