POLOKWANE – Ion Baciu Wrestling Club’s members are already preparing for several big events on their calendar this year.
Coach Jan Roets is confident that his team of wrestlers and mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters will perform well over the next couple of months.
JD van der Merwe will fight for the Fightstar Fighting Championship bantamweight title on February 28, facing opponent JP Buys.
This match up between Van der Merwe and Buys promises to be one of the best fights of the year, according to South African MMA blog, smacktalk.co.za.
Roedie Roets and Elbert Steyn will also compete in the 11th Fightstar Fighting Championship on February 28.
Another big event on the club’s calendar are the trials for the South African wrestling team that are set to take place in Pretoria on March 28.
According to Jan, Roedie, Steyn, Lucius van Rensburg, Theyman Jongbloed, Henk van Zyl and Terry van Rensburg all have a good chance to be selected for the South African wrestling team that will travel to Egypt for the African Wrestling Championships that are set to start on May 27.
“At the moment we are focusing on fitness and strength training and in two weeks we will shift the focus of training to drills and sharpening reflexes on the mat,” says Jan.
“I believe that each one of these wrestlers has the ability to represent South Africa at the African Wrestling Championship.
“The MMA fighters will definitely do us proud next month.”
