Big prizes at mayor’s sports tournament

The top eight teams in the Polokwane Municipality Mayor's Football and Netball Cup Tournament will compete for a spot in the finals at the Seshego Stadium and Zone 6 Sport Grounds on Saturday

POLOKWANE – The top eight teams in the Polokwane Municipality Mayor’s Football and Netball Cup Tournament will compete for a spot in the finals at the Seshego Stadium and Zone 6 Sport Grounds on Saturday.

“The 2013 tournament attracted scouts who were looking for talent, a trend we are hoping to continue during the 2014 edition in order to give youngsters a chance to play at a professional level,” says Polokwane Municipality head of communications, Tidimalo Chuene.

“This a programme put in place to develop and promote continuous participation in organised sport, as well as ensuring Polokwane remains the sporting hub of Limpopo. The promotion of sport is also consistent with smart living, which is one of Polokwane 2030 smart city vision pillars.”

The finals of the second instalment of this annual tournament are a culmination of ward and cluster level competitions, which took place in September with 49 football teams and 24 netball teams taking part.

The overall winner in each sporting code will take home R50 000, with second and third position receiving R20 000 and R15 000 respectively, including trophies and medals.

The team in fourth position will pocket R10 000. The top four teams in each cluster will receive a playing kit and R1 000, with each participating team receiving two practice balls and a whistle.

Best players in different positions per code will also receive cash and trophies. The finals, comprising of the top four teams, will be held at the Seshego Stadium on December 6 at 09:00.

In order to ensure expert technical officiating and operations, the u/19 tournament is organised in partnership with the South African Football Association (Safa), Polokwane Local Football Association (Polfa) and Netball South Africa (NSA).
