Gift with a R3m price tag

RED hot Baroka FC captain, Gift Motupa, could soon be donning the famous black and white of Orlando Pirates.

Motupa’s goal-scoring prowess, which saw him finding the back of the net four times already this season, has attracted interest from several Premier Soccer League clubs but Pirates are the favourites to secure the 20-year-old’s signature.

The Ga-Chuene born midfielder was rumoured to be on the verge of signing on the dotted line for University of Pretoria but a hefty price tag of R3 million is believed to have scared the Pretoria-based club away.

Baroka FC head coach, Sello Chokoe, said he could not rule out the possibility of losing his goal machine either during the January transfer window or at the end of the season.

“All I can say now is that Gift is our player and he is focused on doing well for the club.

“Many clubs have been keeping tabs on his progress and his ever improving performances were surely bound to attract interest.

“For now he is our player and as far as I am concerned he is staying, but anything is possible in football. He might join another team at the end of the season or even earlier than that,” said Chokoe.

Baroka chairperson, Khurishi Mphahlele, has gone public to say that, if Motupa were to leave his club, he would definitely join Orlando Pirates. He denied the allegations that Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs were closing in on the Motupa.

Meanwhile Baroka’s lukewarm start to the season might force the club’s management to keep their star player until the end of the season.

The Ga-Mphahlele based club are lying in 10th position with 10 points from nine matches.

Following their 4-2 defeat against Golden Arrows last Wednesday, Chokoe’s lads will be out to change their fortunes when they travel to Pilditch Stadium for a duel with Garankuwa United on Friday evening.
