The school beat four other schools during the tournament, which was held at the Jack Botes Hall last Tuesday.

Brussels Ngoako’s u/13 boys team emerged victorious, followed by Ramalima Primary School from Mopani district in second place and Thibedi Primary School from Sekhukhune district in third place. Unfortunately, the girls team did not perform as well as the boys team, finishing in fourth place, with Dendron Primary School winning the tournament.

Both schools that won the tournament will travel to Pretoria in December to compete at the national tournament.

Brussels Ngoako principal and chess coach, Daniel Kobe said the school was proud of the teams’ success in the competition.

“We are happy to have represented the Capricorn district well in the tournament, and we look forward to flying the province’s flag high at the national tournament. We are disappointed that our girls team did not make it to the top and we plan to improve our performance in that section,” he said.

Last year, the school produced three players who are now studying at Prestige College in Pretoria after they each won a bursary worth R100 000 for being the best during the national chess tournament.
