City FC ready to shape up

POLOKWANE City FC caretaker coach, Junior Bhengu, said the team has quality players and that they would turn a corner and win some matches soon.

POLOKWANE City FC caretaker coach, Junior Bhengu, said the team has quality players and that they would turn a corner and win some matches soon.

Bhengu spoke after Polokwane City were thumped 3-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns in an Absa Premiership match, which was played at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday.

A first half strike by Cuthberth Malajila and second half goals from Themba Zwane and Teko Modise condemned City FC to their second 3-0 home defeat.

Rise and Shine, as City FC are known in football circles, succumbed to the same score line against Orland Pirates three weeks ago.

If Bhengu’s promises are anything to go by, the same Pirates will not know what hit them when the two clubs clash in a Telkom Cup match at the Orlando Stadium on Sunday.

“We were all over Sundowns in the first 25 minutes, we missed opportunities and when they scored, our morale went down. To lose our top marksman, Roggert Nyundu, did not help matters, but we have a quality team and we will bounce back.

“We conceded many goals because we are an attacking team, but we need to put effort in our defence as well,” he said.

City FC hopes for the speedy recovery of Nyundu, who was stretchered off the pitch after sustaining an injury against Sundowns. Newcomer at the club, Raymond Monama, said players needed to get used to the tactics of the new coach and aimed for a top eight finish at the end of the season.

“I was happy to play against my former team (Sundowns), but it was not about them. I always do my best. As players, all we need is to adjust to the new coach’s methods and the positive results will come.

Personally I am happy to play again. With the support of my teammates I will reach top form soon,” Monama said.

City FC’s next PSL league match will be against Bloemfontein Celtic at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in the Free State on October 19.

Celtic suffered a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Supersport United on Sunday. City FC hopes to have their head coach, Kosta Papic, and number one goalkeeper, Modiri Marumo, available for the duel against Celtic.

The two have not been available for the club to due to delays in their work permits.

City FC have lost five of their seven matches, won just once and played to a draw against Amazulu. They won their first match of the season against University of Pretoria.
