UL at bottom of the varsity football league

The University of Limpopo (UL) soccer team is currently second from the bottom of the Varsity Football standings with just one point from four games.

POLOKWANE – The University of Limpopo (UL) soccer team is currently second from the bottom of the Varsity Football standings with just one point from four games.

They will travel to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Stadium on August 25, where they will play against NMMU Madibaz in the sixth round of the varsity league.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has topped the log after several wins in the fifth round of the league.

UL played against the University of Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town on Monday evening, where the teams played to a 1-1 draw.

A relentless attack saw UL crack in the eighth minute after Thapelo Sixishe curled in a corner using the howling wind to get the ball over the UL defence line.

UWC used the opportunity to gain a 1-0 lead. UWC managed to hold on to their lead at half-time, going into half-time with a 1-0 lead. UL midfielder, Austin Dube came closest to scoring, and striker, Theo Phophi eventually got an opportunity through a corner. The wind again played a role as UL found their way back into the game. They kept up the pressure, but failed to score as UWC again held on to secure the draw.

The CEO for Varsity Sports, Duitser Bosman said: “the excitement and quality of Varsity Football is what draws the crowds to these events. These high-energy events are well organised and offer huge spectator entertainment”.

The sixth round of Varsity Football will roll out from August 25 in Mafikeng, Port Elizabeth, Bellville and Cape Town.

UL will face UJ on September 1 at the Bunting Road Campus Sports Complex in Johannesburg. This will be the last match of the league and the top four teams will then battle it out in the semi-finals to gain a spot in the finals.
