Swimmers shine at championships

Eight swimmers from Eagar Aquatics Club participated in the South Africa Short Course Championships in Pietermaritzburg from August 7 to 10.

POLOKWANE – Eight swimmers from Eagar Aquatics Club participated in the South Africa Short Course Championships in Pietermaritzburg from August 7 to 10.

These championships served as trials for the World Championships to be held in Doha, Quatar in December.

The coach, Douggie Eagar, said: “when one considers that the swimmers were competing against senior swimmers such as world record holder, Chad le Clos and Cameron van der Bergh, our young swimmers did exceptionally well”.

He said the swimmers were committed and did their best. He said the club consisted of talented swimmers and he foresaw a bright future for them.

“The swimmers were honoured to compete with professional swimmers and I believe they have learnt a lot from this competition,” said Eagar.

Ude Fuchs finished in fifth place in the 100 m butterfly in a time of 53:67:00, won the B finals in the 400 m individual medley in a time of 4:29:29 and finished the 200 m butterfly in a time of 2:03:32.

Jacque Jansen van Rensburg made it to the finals in the 400 m freestyle in a time of 3:58:95 and finished in position eight.

Laura Lennox made it to the semi-finals in the 100 m breaststroke. Christoff Ras made it to the B final in the 200 m breaststroke, 400 m freestyle and 200 m individual medley.

Sulé van der Merwe was the star for Eagar Aquatics in the 200 butterfly m finals after finishing the race in fourth place in a time of 2:21:08. He obtained eighth place in the 400 m individual medley after finishing the race in a time of 5:04:02. He also claimed sixth place in the 800 m freestyle and 200 m backstroke after finishing in a time of 2:19:59.

Ockert Vermeulen made it to the B finals in the 400 m freestyle.
