Top prize for top tricks

The second annual Ry's & Remax Skateboarding competition took place in the parking lot at Mall of the North on Saturday.

POLOKWANE – The second annual Ry’s & Remax Skateboarding competition took place in the parking lot at Mall of the North on Saturday.

Skateboarders competed in three categories: amateur (an open division), intermediate (16 years and older) and 13 years and younger.

Wilsie Oosthuizen, owner of Remax, said he had known Rynardt van der Merwe for some time when Van der Merwe approached him with the idea of a skateboarding competition.

“When I heard his idea, I immediately thought that it was a great idea, and we put our heads together and organised the event,” he said.

Van der Merwe, who was not only an organiser of the event, but also a judge, said technique and skills did play a major role in the competition. However, he said it was the way the skateboarder landed after he finished a trick that made all the difference.

“The trick could be executed perfectly, but if a skateboarder missed the landing, he lost some points,” he explained.

Participants from as far as Haenertsburg and Lebowakgomo and their supporters took part in this competition. A total of 58 skateboarders competed for the top prize, which included a brand new skateboard for the winner.

Other prizes included various vouchers and cash prizes.

Fast Bikes Polokwane (Triumph), Pussy Natural Energy, Remax Polokwane, Wimpy Mall of the North, Mitchell House, Legend Towing Services, We Brand It and Triumph sponsored the event. Love 4 Toys sponsored some of the prizes.

Oosthuizen said Remax thanked all participants, sponsors and the host, Mall of the North for their dedication, contributions and enthusiasm.

“We hope to make each year bigger and better.”
