Baroka FC moves to top of the log

A HAT trick of victories over Cape Town-based clubs has seen Baroka FC move to the top of the National First Division (NFD), sharing this spot with Chippa United.

Baroka FC collected 36 points off 21 matches and the club is now the strong favourite to clinch the NFD honours ahead of United, who have two games in hand.

Bakgaga ba Ga-Mphahlele played four consecutive matches at home and did not disappoint. After playing to a 1-1 draw with United FC, the Sello Chokoe lads bounced back and recorded a hard fought 2-1 win over Milano United, which was followed by 3-0 and 2-0 victories over Vasco da Gama and FC Cape Town respectively.

With nine matches to go, Baroka coach has taken the pressure off his players by saying they were not thinking about promotion to the Premier Soccer League. He said he was taking it one game at a time and did not want to invite unnecessary pressure. “My boys are mentally weak at this stage and we are doing all we can to collect as many points as possible. Our aim is to win the next match and see how far we can go,” Chokoe said.

Baroka has been boosted by the arrival of box-to-box striker Victor Letsoalo who joined the club from Peace United during the January transfer window.

The burley striker has found the back of the net twice in three matches and has been a handful for opposition defenders.

Letsoalo will be the man to watch when Baroka faces Jomo Cosmos on March 1.
