Mokopane Primary Waterberg soccer champs

The top u/13 soccer teams in the Waterberg District faced each other in a key battle on Saturday at the Mahwelereng Stadium for a chance to reign as the Chuene Soccer Tournament Champions.

MOKOPANE – After a tough showdown the Mokopane Primary School team representing the Potgietersrus Circuit claimed the winning title.

The action packed day drove the Mokopane Primary team to get creative leading up to the ‘win or go home’ showdown in the semi-final against the team of Hans Masibe Primary School.

Their 4-2 won over Hans Masibe secured them a place in the final where they faced their toughest rival the team from Johannes Masibe Primary. The Mokopane Primary School team dominated the field and brought the curtain down on the Chuene Tournament as they won 7-1 and walked away with the trophy as tournament champions.

The atmosphere was static not only because the teams clashed head-on in an epic soccer battle, but also because it was there chance to impress the renowned scouts of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Among the crowd of spectators was the national scout for the u/13 Mamelodi Sundowns team, Mandla Mazibuko, the provincial scout, Ike Pula and the Assistant Director of the Gauteng Department of Sport, Marothi Letsoalo.

Shaun Maleka, Lesiba Khotsa and Thabang Thusi, learners of Mokopane Primary School, showed off their physical attributes, mental makeup, and of course their talent and technical skill on the field and were scouted by Mazibuko, Pula and Letsoalo to play in the trials later this year.

Coach Abner Maubane from Mokopane Primary, said: “The tournament confirmed that even against the toughest team we get stronger as the game goes on, and I think that’s a great sign for the future. I truly am a proud coach”.
