Old and young come together for active fun day

The event aimed to encourage unity among communities, promote healthy living through fitness and encourage networking and a progressive lifestyle.

LIMPOPO- The ‘I Choose to be Active’ fun walk, netball tournament and aerobics event brought together more than 300 people from the Sinthumule and Kutama for a day filled with exercise recently, organised by the Department of Sport.

The event participants varied from young and old community members, from youths to leaders and pastors. The fun walk started at the Muduluni Hall and went to Madodonga and back for a 10km long return.

“We had a successful event that continues to be the talk of the area as everyone enjoyed it a lot,” said the director of the department in Vhembe, Thagalu Thovhakale.

“The event aimed to encourage unity among the communities, promoting a healthy living through fitness and more importantly, to encourage networking and a progressive lifestyle.” Those present were encouraged to form small exercise groups that will run throughout the year.

People participate in the fun walk.

He said this was the second year that the walk had been hosted and that the turnout was good.

“The elderly members were a true example to the young people. If people could increase their daily levels of physical activity, they would benefit a lot. Engage in 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, at least three days in a week.”

Kanukani Maphubu, who is responsible for sport at the Makhado Municipality, commended participants for keeping themselves fit.

“You are not wasting time by walking, but keeping your bodies healthy. A healthy body has a healthy mind. These elders in their golden years are shunning the stigma that goes with old age. Let’s do away with the idea that elders are supposed to sit at home, doing nothing until sunset. By maintaining an active lifestyle, you are a very good example to your children and grandchildren,” he said.
