Polokwane Athletics Club runner sets Comrades record

The 81-year-old Johannes Mosehla set a 34-year-old record last held by runner Wally Hayward in 1989.

POLOKWANE- One of the oldest runners from the Polokwane Athletics Club, Johannes Mosehla (81) smashed the 34-year-old record of runner Wally Hayward by completing the Comrades Marathon in a time of 09:26.

The previous record stood at just over 10 hours.

Reflecting on his feat this Sunday, Mosehla said he was happy with the milestone.

“I have been working hard for all these years to achieve this. When I joined Polokwane Athletic Club I just wanted to run the Comrades Marathon. I never thought that one would break the Wally Hayward record. Despite my age I still want to run again next year. I think I still have a lot of mileage in my legs.”

Corrie Calitz, the chairperson of Polokwane Athletic Club said they are proud to be associated with Johannes.

“He joined us years ago and has been consistent in local races. He is a consummate professional and young people can learn a lot from him. We are a club that caters for runners from all ages. To have someone of Johannes Mosehla’s stature who still breaks records, is amazing.”

Mosehla was set to arrive back in the city yesterday, when it was planned that the mayor would welcome him at the State of the City address.
